Question Just turned TWO and already...

Austin had his 2 year old check up on Monday (August 9th). I was told he is on the bigger side for his age - taller and heavier than 85% of children his age. I figured he was going to show up as being big because of the size of clothes I have to buy him. He already needs 3T-4T shirts. I am also not surprised because my daughter is also very tall...but she is more lean than Austin. Jillian reminds me of a tall string bean LOL. I'm 5 foot 10...my parents were tall and my husband's family are relatively tall people -so its not a far stretch to see my kids being on the taller/bigger side.

Anyway. After being told Austin is doing just fine the doc started talking to me about potty training Austin. To already sit him on the toilet after his meals. I didn't start training Jillian until she turned 3 years old. Primarily it was because I attempted to train Jillian at 2 and then 2 1/2 but it was a constant mess and so stressful.

Austin has shown some interest. He likes to sit on the potty for a minute or two but then he tells me he's "done" and gets off even though he's not done a thing on it. He refuses to stay on once he's declared he's "done." I really don't want to get all worked up and fighting with my son to sit on the toilet. I was thinking prior to the pediatric appointment to start really trying to have Austin go on the potty when he was 2 1/2 or closer to three.

I dunno......do I really have to start training him now? When did you start potty training your child/children and when did they finally get the hang of it?

I did start mine getting familar with the potty at 18mths or so,having the potty around and once a week maybe sitting them on it,my first two were dry during the day by 2,at night not until 3 or so though. However Milly(girls are suppose to be easier according to friends)was not dry even during the day until March/April,so was 3yrs 3/4mths!!!

You will know when it is time to do it,familiarise him with the potty as your doing etc,but he won't be forced,he might be fine but I don't think you can force it at any age.

Although I don't have any experience yet, I did buy a potty chair for Matthew when he turned a year old and he knows exactly where it's at and what we're supposed to use it for. But he is just now getting to the point where he will now tell me when he has pooed or peed in his diaper....so I think that here within the next couple months, I will really start sitting him on the potty several times a day and take it from there. Now, with that being said, my mom has told me that I was fully potty trained (day and night) by the time I was 2 years old and that my brother was fully potty trained by the time he was 2 1/2. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that no, I don't think 2 years is too young to potty train if they seem ready. But I would definitely take cues from the child. If he seems completely uninterested in the potty or seems like he doesn't understand, then I would hold off a bit and not force it.

Yes Vicky, getting them to tell you BEFOREHAND is the key....LOL! We were in the mall yesterday, walking through the shoe store and Matthew looked at me and said, "poo poo". And I said, "Matthew, do you need to go poo poo?" And then he smiled at me and let it rip.....I smelled it and heard it at the same time.... So he gave me all of about 5 seconds warning!!

I'll probably introduce Camden to the potty when he's 2. I wont force the issue though. Serenity was fully trained at 2.5 and she was truly ready. There was no accidents in result. I guess for alot of people 2 is the magic age, well atleast my fam. because i was always catching flack from them about why she wasnt potty trained instantly when she turned 2. I'm figuring it may take a bit longer for Camden tho since he's a boy. We'll see!

I know that sounded stupidI am having major brainfarts tonight didn't mean it how it sounded I meant they get the nastiness of what is in there nappy but it takes them a while longer to associate the feeling with what is going to end up in there nappy

We introduced Avery to the potty at about 20 months and she was potty trained at 21 months. They're all different, so go by what he can and willing to do. Avery was ready, but showed no signs until we started talking to her about it and showing her. She still wears diapers at night and naptime and she's 2 1/2, but been diaperless for the day since 21 months.
We lost our 2nd baby on 11/5/10. BUT God has given us a wonderful surprise...
