    Question Constipation

So, Wyatt will not poop in the potty, so I've tried letting him wear a diaper but he refuses that, he just will not go in the potty. It's been 2 days since he last went, and I know it's hurting him. I get him to sit on the toilet and all he does is kick, screem and cry. What do I need to do to help him, a stool softener (do they have that for 3 yr olds?) I"m at a loss, he pees fine in the potty, doesn't put on a diaper until bedtime, for naps he is diaperless :) and stays dry!

I'm not sure what to give him, we always did the prune juice trick. I hope someone can help you out more, especially since he's refusing to poop on the potty. I would probably just still make him sit there until he finally goes, but that's just my opinion since I haven't actually dealt with that.

Pedialax makes an over the counter stool softener that is chewable. I get it at WalMart or my local grocery store. You can give 1 to 3 tablets per day. Brett occassionally tells me his poop is too big and he needs help, and two tablets usually does the trick within a few hours.

Over here it's usually lactoluse that is given to young kids with constipation which is a stool softener. It didn't work for Josh and if he is already really blocked then you might need a suppository to get things cleared.

More naturally there is prunes but Josh would never have that. We found that fresh pineapple juice and grapes really helped him.

Grapes always help me go and Connor eats them regularly and never has problems. Maybe try that?

Thanks Girls. I suppose I could slip in prune juice into some grape juice or something, otherwise he won't drink it. He did finally go last night, but it wasn't until I put his night/bed time diaper on, so I was glad that he wasn't bound up or anything.

Will he go in a pullup? Or rather he won't go at all?

My son has poop issues (all 2 years of his life). He gets a fiber gummy once a day and one full cup of 100% juice (diluted with water other times). It seems to have him mostly regular now. The fiber gummies are sold at Walmart in the fiber section. If he has problems later with constipation later that might help. Glad he finally went for you. Keep up the good work with potty training!

Also wanted to add that the gummies are made for kids.

No suggestions on the potty thing. We are getting nowhere. Maybe just keep talking it up?

As far as keeping him regular? Fruit and lots of it. Grapes, blueberries, anything with skins that dont break down. Or high in water stuff like melon. We always offer plenty of water to drink through the day. Eli will also snack on fiber-y cereals like mini-wheats (he likes the strawberry) if I put them in a baggie to give him while we're out or from a bowl (dry) while playing or watching tv at home.

Absolutely true about the fruit. Also PLUMS. And also PEARS and PEAR JUICE.

And if you have any trouble getting a constipation-prone child to eat healthily, you can always threaten them - it'e eat this, or suppository right now!
