    Default Ovulation Tests

I just took an ovulation test and it came back very negative. According to my cycle, I should be ovulating tomorrow. I dont think I did anything wrong, but my husband did pick up the test before he should have. He picked it up about a minute early. It says to lay it flat undisturbed for three min. there was barely a pink line on the test window. I dont know if this should be something to look into because I may not be ovulating yet after the pill, or if the test was just inaccurate. It was just a walgreens brand. How accurate and touchy are these tests? I cant do the bbt yet because I dont know my baseline yet. My cm is very thin wet and slippery right now, so dont that mean that ovualtion should be approaching? Please somebody, I need some advice.

Hi Mandy, ovulation predictor kits detect LH surge. This surge will result in a positive result and you should ovulate between 24-36 hours after. You can also see the change in levels of the Lutenizing Hormone if you look at your tests carefully. You might get a faint line at the begining of the surge, then a stronger line and a faint line at the end of the surge. Once your LH has surged the egg is released (ovulation) and is only viable for 24 hours. Therefore once you get a positive result you should baby dance within the next 48 hours. I would probably try to do another test, most times they are very accurate but do another just in case. I hope that I made sense to you. Best of luck and baby dust Sam.

Thanks sam. Yes you make sense. I guess I was just wrong about when I am supposed to ovulate. Tomorrow was day 14 for me so I thought it was coming. I guess I dont ovulate midcycle. I will try another test in the morning though just to make sure. Thanks again.

The average luteal phase (dpo) is 14 days but I have heard of some being 12. I guess your best bet is to test over the next few days. I would also do more than 1 in the day just in case you miss the LH surge. You know that the ovulation tests do not need first morning urine and that they can be done at any point of the day. Just don't drink too much prior to testing as it will dilute your urine. Happy baby dancing and baby dust. Sam

So I tested two more times and both came back negative. Do you think it is possible that I ovulated around day 12 or so of my cycle? I have a feeling that I ovulated already. There is already a big difference in my cm. The other thing is that the directions say if it comes back with nothing on it , it could mean I may already be pregnant, or it is just an invalid test. I dont think three tests were invalid. I may not be ovulating at all too. My cycle has been pretty normal though and on time.

Hi Mandy, how long is your usual cycle? If it is a 28 day cycle, ovulation would probably occur on CD14 using the average woman's luteal phase. So did you test on CD12, CD13 and CD14? Next time if you are not pregnant, I would try to test a couple of days before and after around the date that you think you might ovulate. Hopefully, this will cover all your bases then. Have you tried charting your BBT? You can then track if and when you ovulate. Best of luck and baby dust. Sam

    sam,

I tested on day 14, because I am on a 28 day cycle. I was on the pill for about 10 years due to ovarian cysts and bad painful periods. I went off of the pill about 3 months ago before we got married because I knew we wanted to ttc right away. The last two periods have been right on time and last about 4 days. The first normal period after the pill was quite light, and the last period was pretty heavy. That is how I was on the pill though. It would be not so bad one month and the next I knew to expect a heavy one. I dont know if the pill could still have some effect on me, or I am just not testing right like you said because I started on day 14. I will keep testing though for the next couple of days to make sure. I thought if you started having a regular cycle you should be ovualting normally again. I read that you can have your period and not ovulate, but also heard that if it is pretty regular it is pretty rare for that to happen. I am very confused at the moment. All this calculating and baby dancing is really sending me for a whirl. I want a baby so bad. My husband is a physician and he keeps telling me to not stress about it but it is kinda hard not to. It seems like I got it all figured out and then all the sudden these tests are negative, so obviously I figured wrong somewhere. I know it can take a while to get pregnant, which is fine I just want to know that I have my whole cycle figured out so when we do try, I have peace of mind that atleast I know we are baby dancing at the right times. I havent tried the bbt yet because I dont know my baseline yet. If this one dont work then I will switch to that instead. Thanks for listening to me vent, my husband gets upset when I vent because he doesnt want me freaking out about it. He is very supportive, but yet I cant tell him how I really feel because he gets worried that Im stressing too much. Thanks again, you have been alot of help.

Mandy, you are doing all the right things so try not to stress so much. Your husband is right, just enjoy the baby dancing and relax. This in itself will help a great deal, but I know it is easier said than done. Best of luck for this month and sending tons of baby dust. Sam

    Hi, Mandy.

I noticed you said you tested on CD14, the day you expected to ovulate. The OPKs are for predicting before you ovulate, so if you ovulated on CD14, it is very possible that the test would have been negative by then. The OPKs pick up your LH surge, which typically occurs 24-48 hours before ovulation. This means you would normally expect it to be positive on CD12 or CD13 if ovulation occurs on CD14. Does that make sense?

I do recommend you chart your basal body temperature. This will give you a clear picture of what is going on with your cycle and help to reduce the stress. Combining the OPK and the BBT chart will tell you quite a bit.

    Sending tons of your way.

    Elleth,

Thankyou very much for your response. That gives me alot more hope now than I had. It makes complete sense. I was so worried that I wasnt ovulating but now maybe I just missed the days to be testing. Thanks again, that helped alot.
