Default Get in control of your labour!

    Hi Girls,

I'm still in South Africa, but back from my holiday in the UK and Spain. We had such a super time! Photies will follow soon.

Since I've been here, I feel like I've been given a whole new outlook on labour.
As most of you know, I live in deepest darkest Africa (Mozambique to be specific) and there is little to no medical care there, so I have opted to fly to Johannesburg in South Africa 6 weeks before Baby Bear is due to have him there. The medical care in South Africa is very good and the private clinics are up there with the top in the world.

I had planned to have my Ob/Gyn deliver my baby in one of the top private clinics in Johannesburg, and my hope was to have an all natural birth. I had also done research into using a Doula and a private midwife.

Try and imagine my shock when I found out that South Africa has the highest rate of C-Sections IN THE WORLD at 94%
And the clinic I was planning on having my baby at sits at a 96% C-Section rate!
This got me very interested in speaking to women who'd had babies at this clinic. Every one of the girls I spoke to was hoping for a natural birth, but were informed at the last minute, or as they went into labour, that they had to have a C-section for some reason or another. Every one of these girls felt afterwards that they were pushed into having a C-section and could in fact have delivered naturally! They all said they felt cheated.

I have now found a fabulous Midwife and a wonderful Doula who will both be present at my water birth in a Private Active Birthing facility. If I do end up needing to have a C-section for a valid reason, I will accept that, but I don't want to be cut up just for the sake of it!!!

I phoned my Ob/Gyn today to notify him of the change of plans and to request that he sends me all my blood test results, etc. Lets just say he was exceptionally rude to me and tried to make me feel silly for wanting a natural birth.

I am confident that I have made the right decision. I have been reading books non-stop and I have now realised how important it is to educate yourself about your pregnancy and your baby's birth.

Don't just hand your labour over to someone else. Take control of your own labour and know your rights!

    And READ, READ, READ!!!!

Wow, that is a very high C/S rate! I have had two C/S myself. I know they say the C/S rate goes up with older mothers as well but you're only 26 so thats not right! Oh my it sounds like you have taken control of what you want to do and how you want your birth experience to be. I am fascinated by water births. I have seen some stories on the Disc Health channel showing the birth, very interesting. What exactly does it entail? Is there alot of pain? Can't even imagine but I do see the baby coming out of the woman's body into the water and being just fine!

Didn't Angelina Jolie have her baby girl in the same place? She also had a C/S and she is only 30 which is young to have that. I wonder if she made it elective but I thought she wanted natural so don't know.

That's a very high rate!!! I myself have had a c section and will do again with this baby but that's for valid medical reasons and I don;t feel cheated in anyway as I very nearly died with #1 had it not been for medical intervention and really though I suppose what ever way your baby gets into the world it's a fabulous miracle but women should have a say unless medically unsafe which way,I will never have options of home birth or water etc as I need to deliver in theater but that doesn't bother the outcome does!! I am really surprised at somewhere like South africa having such a high rate you'd expect the high rates to be USA or US really wouldn't you as they have so many of the "too posh to push Celebs"!!!!

I hope you get to have the birth of your choice and if the Oby/gyn feels that way then he's stupid sorry but he is,he's no medical reason for you not to have a natural a birth as possible!!! Some people think they're god hey!!!! Good Luck to you Christie!!

Not all of us "non" celebs follow that option to make it a majority. I believe that most of us that live in the US we never opt to have a c-section by choice.

Well, it may the celebs that opt to have a C/S but us normal folk would rather NOT have a C/S unless absolutely necessary! I was scared to death of having a C/S but was prepared to have one if necessary.
Non Celebs shouldn't be counted along with the celeb population

Christi, that is so sad that women dont get a choice! I would love to try a water birth, I've seen them and it seems to me that both baby and mother go through less stress.
I think have you have made a wonderful decision by letting them know what YOU want!
