    Default Eating TOO much?!?

I'm not sure, but I think Eli is eating too much. He just started eating 5 ounces, but the formula also has about 1 1/2 tablespoons of cereal. AND he eats every 1 1/2 to 2 hrs.! He'll gobble all his food up & then he gets so hungry..so quick! I thought that cereal would make him eat less b/c it's heavier...but no. And he won't take a pacifier! If it doesn't have food, he doesn't want it! I don't know what to do! Last week he went to the doctor & weighed 8 lbs. 7.5 oz. already. I know when he goes Friday he'll be over 9 lbs. Well..I just wanted to ask b/c I'm not sure! Thanks!

Chase is eating 4-5oz with 1 teaspoon of cereal per ounce too. I also thought he would eat less / sleep longer b/c of this but NOPE. He's getting to be a butterball, LOL. I use the rice cereal. My doc said that its fine, better to be eating more than not enough. I had the worst week with him ever last week, he cried so, so much. My nerves are frazled and the few times I can get him to fall asleep (not in my arms) I walk around like a speed demon, thinking of all the stuff I need to get done b/c who knows when he'll awake. Even when DH is home I rush everything, my body just naturally does it, lol. How's Elijah doing? These past 2 days Chase has improved, maybe the meds just kicked in, , he's sleeping better (knock on wood) I noticed that in the past 2 days he has been tooting (farting) like a champ, so maybe since he's able to get it out, it has improved his mood. Its all a big guessing game these days.

Mo, so glad to hear Chase is doing better! And how are you doing? I saw the new pictures..I LOVE his cheeks..so cute! Actually, Elijah is sleeping SO much better! I think he finally got used to the cereal. He's still pooting like crazy! But now he doesn't cry when he does it. Elijah's situation sounds a lot like Chases'. Eli's mood has improved SO much. He only wakes up about twice a night now. He used to stay up about 3 hrs. at a time! I'm glad to hear Eli's eating is normal! I had no idea..!

Is he still spitting up? My oldest seemed like she wanted to eat NON stop. Hers was because the reflux.. And she had cereal in her bottles. She didnt have it as bad as my son did though. But she was the one that seemed to eat non stop.. He'll also continue to go through lil growth spurts where he will eat more at times than others.

i also thought my baby was wating to much, so I would feed him a set amount which is about 5 ounces, and he cries and cries, if he hungry he will spit the pacifer out, so I feed him more he eats at least 6 ounces sometimes 7. He's barely spitting up now, but dang..he can eat! I didn't know if it was normal. Now he's starting to poop more too. I'm glad I asked. I didn't know if he just wanted to eat or if he really was hungry. Thanks so much!

    Thanks ladies!

Have you tried water in his bottle. Sometimes babies are just happy to have something going into their stomach.

    Lightbulb Re: Eating TOO much?!?

I don't know what your pediatrician said about cereal and formula, but here's what mine told me. He said not to give Jill cereal (even if its watered down in her bottle w formula)...it can cause constipation (and gas) because it is harder for their little newborn bellies to digest. Now, my mother n law insisted that giving cereal w/ formula bottle at night would help her sleep longer. I found (and dr confirmed) that this is just not the case. I tried it one night and Jill slept just as long without the cereal as with it....and she had a rock hard poopie the next day as a result w lots of gas. Passing the stool was alot harder for her too. My pediatrician said to start cereal around 5 months and then baby food at 6. Now, my best friends mother worked in the NICU for 30 some years and told me that they used to thicken the formula with RICE cereal when the sick babies had aspiration problems (she said it made it a bit thicker so the babes couldn't suck the formula into their lungs). So...I don't know whether the info I got was the best...but its what I did.

Jill weighed almost 8 pounds at birth...now she's going to be 7 months and is 19.11lbs 27" long. Dr said she's in the 95% for height and weight. She is eating 8oz bottles about 4-5X a day along with cereal or baby food for lunch and dinner. She was eating a good four ounces by 12 weeks.

Also...Dr. reminded me this....Babies have a growth spurts [usually every 3 and 6 (3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, etc)]. So during the spurt your little one will eat a whole lot more (need that energy). So I wouldn't be alarmed about how much he/she is eating...just so that she is. I never heard of a Dr. complaining to a parent about a chubby baby. Later in their life maybe (ya don't want an obese 8 yr old)...and even if your babe is chubby now--wait til he/she's walking. Then you and our angel will be loosing the calories running around.

Cereal shouldnt be given to newborns or infants under 4/5 months of age unless told to do so by the ped..

Her lil Eli is on cereal because he has reflux and cant keep the formula down other wise.
