Question Toilet training - will NOT poop in the toilet!!

Hi everyone,

I've started toilet training my little man this week (he's 2 and a half) and he is doing really really well. He will happily do wee in the toilet, standing up just like daddy. We've even been out of the house and he's stayed dry and gone in public toilets and has just done wonderfully.

However.....

He will NOT poop in the toilet. He has done it in his undies every day. I can get him to sit on the toilet but I'm pretty sure he'll only do that when he knows he doesn't have to go. When he's pooping and I say let's go, he'll have a melt down. I've got him a special toilet only book, special wipes just for him, have tried bribing with chocolate/lollies. I've also tried him on a potty in case the big toilet scares him when he sits on it (although I don't think it does) but he's not interested in that either except for doing wee.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have any suggestions of what I can try? Do you think that I should stop him using the toilet all together and go back to nappies?

Thanks

Yes, yes... we have had the same problem! I posted a couple of weeks ago about the same thing!

http://www.babytalkzone.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=83676

Honestly, he just overcame this problem himself, in time. I can't pinpoint anything we did or said, he just got brave I guess! Hope the same happens for you guys.

I would say that he is too young, no use in starting too early with potty training. I went through the same thing and it frustrated me to no end! I then decided to wait until 3 years and it was the best decision for us. Good luck!

We started potty training Nathaniel at 22 months. He took to going pee on the potty straight away, but it took 8 months to get him to finally go poop. I think he was scared to.

He would go hide either upstairs or under the sink cabinet. We weren't in a huge hurry to push it with him and since I was taking care of a newborn I just went along for the ride thinking that he would just grow out of it on his own.

Then one weekend I had had enough. 8 months was too long for him to not give in and do it. So, Dustin and I watched him like a hawk. We got him before he was on his way upstairs to do his business and put him on the potty instead. Nathaniel of course flipped out. Dustin calmly told him that it is ok, just "push the poopy out". They were there for maybe 10-15 minutes of Nathaniel crying and Dustin encouraging him to just go poop. Then we decided to just let him down, knowing that he did have to go.

We kept watching him and when he made his move to hide again we put him back on the potty. Same thing, Nathaniel crying and Dustin calmly telling him to just go. FINALLY he did. I don't know how long they were in the bathroom but it seemed like about the same time as before.

We pretty much threw Nathaniel a party. We put some music on and did a happy dance. We also had a jelly belly dispenser where you put in a coin and turn for a few candies. We gave him a coin and congratulated him on a job well done.

That is all it took. For the next month or so he got a coin for the candies for every poop. After that first poop, we never had an accident after that with poop. Like I said, I think he was just afraid to do it on the potty. It was almost like he thought he was doing something wrong.

I hope that you can get it figured out with your little guy.

Well at least we're not alone.

Thanks for the replies. It seems we may just have to wait it out.

And I love the idea of throwing a party Froggielover - too cute.

Oh wow I could have wrote your post a few months back.
Marcel was also quick to master the wee part of PT... but we had all our days and tears and drama with the poopy part.
He just wasn't ready.
I think especially for boys, the feeling to poop is different than the feeling to wee. To them it feels as if a part of their body is going to fall off when they poop and it frigthens them.
Patience is the only thing to try out here. He'll learn to go when he's ready. Marcel only mastered the art of toilet pooping when he turned 4!

You can try to take him to the loo with a nappy on. Tell him he can still make the poop in his nappy, but he must sit on the toilet.

We also used a star chart for Marcel and bribed him with lots and lots of sweet (the latter part not the best method... but it worked).

Good luck!!

I started off with the potty not the toilet for Matthew as it was easier for me to get him to the potty instead of running upstairs with him when I thought that he needed to go. I kept him with no pants or nappy on in the house during the day and I knew tried to keep an eye on him, as best I could with a newborn in the house. Then when he went to hide, which he did when he pooed, I would pick him up and sit him on the potty but he would hold it and then go and poo somewhere. This went on for about a weekish and then one time I caught him mid way through a poo and sat him on the potty and he finished it in the potty. Well, then I went totally overboard with praise, cuddles and kisses and we called EVERYONE - his dad, both grandparents, aunties etc and told them Matthew had to tell them something and he told them he pooed on the potty and they all praised him and he was so pleased with himself that we only had a couple of accidents after that. For me, toilet training was hard and I did struggle, I started and stopped about 4 times and didnt get him trained until he was 3 because he just wasn't ready. Good luck - it will all fall into place x

My husband had the idea to train our daughter and I let HIM do it at first then our daughter would be gone and I was like you know shes pooping in her pants right now in her room and sure enough she was, so we just kept her in sight at all times and put her on the potty while she was going. But I think my daughter was just too easy to train but thats what worked for us.

Hang in there, my little angels still won't poop in the big potty. They will in the potty but not the big girl potty. I think it's the seat.
